As a Child of Mercury, you have long been accustomed to the dance of survival. Like an expert fencer, you swoop and swing when you’ve got a shot; otherwise you stay light on your feet and prance away from glancing blows until you can land a hit.

But 2019 will stand out as the year when instead prancing around for your own survival, you are prancing around, possibly engaged in a two-step with a true, blue partner. Yes, Gemini, this could be a year when you will feel you’ve met your match.

In a world where you often feel precariously solo, this is the year for you to catch a break. Whether in business or in marriage, there is somehow so much more of what you have longed for: backing and support, love and admiration, perspective, increased opportunities, mutual benefit, conversation and above all: a sense of humor.

With Jupiter traveling through its own sign of Sagittarius in 2019 in your solar house of marriage, it bodes well for all things related to coupling. But keep in mind, this is the sign opposite of yours and it is your partner, not you, who is broadcasting all the good vibes from Jupiter. But you’ve no doubt heard it said that a rising tide lifts all boats, so if your dingy is tied up to your partner’s yacht, then expect to be elevated during 2019.

But let’s talk about your partner. This person may seem the perfect match and might well be, but first you’ll need to take off the rose-colored glasses to see the relationship clearly. You, Child of Mercury, deal in the here and the now, in the finiteness of the present, armed with all the facts you think relevant to the situation at hand.

Your partner is far more aspirational and hopeful and lives in the promise of all that is out there. Because your partner is not limited by the myopia of the moment, s/he is able to assess future trends and get in position for opportunities that are down the road a bit. Gemini is many things but not what you’d call a long-range thinker, so the two of you could butt heads about the appropriate course of action, but you both have good points to make.

In addition, as a Child of Mercury, you don’t like being ill-informed or unaware. Your partner is just plain wise or s/he people knows other people who are wise. At times, this may feel intimidating or even humiliating. You don’t really have the patience to learn what they know, either, as you prefer the Cliffs Notes version, please. So, you’ll have to be willing to learn something new without getting defensive or trying to be a know-it-all when you clearly don’t know it all.

Your approach is important, because, if you let it, this partnership could help you make the leap from where you are now to literally a different shore. It could expand your world view greatly and help you pursue opportunities you hadn’t dreamed off. All you have to do is go along for the ride and keep everyone entertained with your gift of the gab.

At least that is what you’re being told. The reality is your partner needs you as much as you need him or her. Turns out your partner’s financial position may be precarious or even on the verge of insolvency. The possibilities for mutual gain are there, but either the partner is holding on to what s/he has or they flat-out don’t have as much as they hinted they did. So, it might come down to you having to bankroll any deal under consideration.

It will be challenging to come up with the capital you need, and it could be vexing besides. But if anyone is adept at cutting a deal with big-city banker or an angel investor, it’s you. And now you see why this partnership has so much potential. You both bring special talents to the table.

In a way, this feels very good to you. You may not be used to a “working” partnership where both of you have much to offer and can easily dovetail your strengths. By fulling investing yourself, matching your talents and enthusiasm with that of your partner, you can experience relationships in a whole new way, one that is more purposeful, principled and even worthy of being bound by matrimony if you both are so inclined.

While it’s a wonderful feeling, you’re not completely home free. In any given year, there are three to four periods of time when your Ruling Planet, Mercury, is on hiatus and not able to be at his best. They’re times when Mercury, from Earth’s point of view, appears to move backward in the sky. While the retrograde motion is an optical illusion, the backward motion still affects all things ruled by Mercury such as transportation, communication, technology and negotiations.

The year 2019 begins with Mercury just coming out of the “shadow” of last retrograde of 2018. As the year opens, your Ruling Planet is traveling through of Sagittarius, the fire sign of Mercury’s detriment. Perhaps because you are doing the bidding of your partner and having to think “big picture,” you are not able to be as nimble and agile as you can be. It can be quite taxing for those who sift through data like you do to imagine all the possibilities. As such this could cause a good deal of mental strain and confusion.

Add to that the frequent bouts of despair where you question why you put so much of your energy and attention into your career and, in so doing, feel you have to give up on your chance at happiness with a partner. On Jan. 13, you could be feeling some career ennui when Jupiter squares Neptune, the first of three exact squares this year. While your partnership could be filling your head with visions of all the possibilities, you still have to show up at work each day and make the donuts. You just can’t help but wonder if anything will ever change.

The first retrograde of the year on March 6 underscores that restlessness, as Mercury reverses course through your solar 10th house of career, profession and the public eye. You may find that you need to return to a profession you left previously or go back to a position that you thought was behind you – not because you want to but because someone has to make the sacrifice and that someone is you. Keep in mind that this will be a temporary setback but one that forces you to focus on professional concerns and your public image and not have time to think about the good vibes or potential of your partnership. By April 17, you should be able to patch the career problem and make up for lost ground quickly. No need to keep feeling sorry for yourself!

You may actually start to feel renewed and invigorated between April 1 and July 3, when you have four planets that travel through Gemini (first Mars, then Mercury and the Sun, then Venus), all of which oppose a retrograde Jupiter in Sagittarius. In a year when the concerns of your partner figure so prominently, these six weeks are a time when you get to shine and bring the party.

Family and finances are the summer’s focus during the second Mercury retrograde of 2019 (July 8 through Aug. 1). That’s when Mercury travels back into Cancer, bringing up matters that concern parents, siblings, communications, finances and possessions, all potentially causing you upset and the need to redo or go back to something you thought was resolved. You may have been forced to part with certain sentimental possessions, and members of your family might be urging you to get them back or even embarking on a quest to get them back for you. Or you could discover a hidden treasure in the rafters of the family home that has great value. Retrogrades are always opportune for recovering lost objects, especially this one for you.

The third retrograde of the year (from Nov. 1 to Nov. 21) is in the sign of Scorpio and your solar 6th house of work and health. Even though you can be extremely organized and diligent when it comes to your work space, it may be necessary to retrace your steps and reboot your office setting. You could revisit a notion you had left on the cutting-room floor or get pulled back into something you thought was off the table. Some big secrets may surface during this transit (especially those of a financial or sexual nature) and they may have implications for you and your co-workers. This is also an important transit for health, so it may be necessary to pick up on a previous diet or workout regimen to get back in shape.

With all retrogrades, especially for Children of Mercury, it’s important to ask: How did I get here? Looking back over the choices you made and the steps you took to get yourself into your present situation is every bit as important as looking forward and planning for future success. For Geminis, in particular, regrouping is a way of gaining wisdom.

By year’s end, you’ve danced the dance that lovers dance, you’ve felt the “feels” with three emotional retrogrades and you’ve dealt with your confusion and restlessness over your career and made the changes to make it a better fit by going back to an older idea and embracing it.
So, what’s next for 2020? You’ll want to come back here to find out.
